Unsure of how much gravel you need for your next project? Our gravel calculator is the easiest way to get an accurate estimate. All you need are a few quick measurements.
How to calculate the gravel you need for your driveway
For length and width you can measure in metres, feet or yards and for depth you can measure in centimetres or inches.
Getting an accurate estimate
To get a precise number, just use the calculator below. Here's what you need to know:
- Length: How long is the driveway?
- Width: How wide is the driveway?
- Depth: How deep do you want the gravel? A common depth for driveways is between 4 and 6 inches.
Enter these three numbers, and the calculator will tell you exactly how much gravel you'll need. This helps prevent buying too little or too much.
For a quick, rough estimate
If you just need a ballpark figure right now, you can use our table below. It gives a very rough idea of how much gravel is needed for your project.
- For gravel and smaller chippings, a standard installation depth of 50mm (around 2 inches) is recommended for the best stability. This provides even coverage without gaps and works well for pebbles up to 20mm in size.
- If using larger pebbles, up to 50mm, the depth should be increased to 70mm (just under 3 inches).
- For cobbles with diameters up to 120mm, a depth of around 100mm (approximately 4 inches) is required to accommodate their size and rounded shape.
Coverage Area | 3cm Depth | 4cm Depth | 5cm Depth |
---|---|---|---|
1m2 | 5 Poly Bags (100kg) | 5 Poly Bags (100kg) | 5 Poly Bags (100kg) |
5m2 | 1 Bulk Bag / 15 Poly Bags (800kg / 0.3t) | 1 Bulk Bag / 25 Poly Bags (800kg / 0.5t) | 1 Bulk Bag / 25 Poly Bags (800kg / 0.5t) |
10m2 | 1 Bulk Bag (800kg / 0.8t) | 1 Bulk Bag (800kg / 0.8t) | 2 Bulk Bags (1600kg / 1.7t) |
25m2 | 2 Bulk Bags (1600kg / 1.6t) | 3 Bulk Bags (2400kg / 2.4t) | 3 Bulk Bags (2400kg / 2.4t) |

Calculating an estimate of how much gravel or aggregate you need for a driveway is simple with our gravel calculator. All you need to know is the desired length and width of the driveway, along with what gravel depth you need. You can get an estimate right now using the calculator above. If you would like a very rough estimate, take a look at our table below.
To calculate how much gravel you require for your garden, you must know the approximate area you are working with, and the desired depth. For gardens, this can be trickier as the shape may not be a simple square. We recommend extending this to make it a square, as it is better to order too many aggregates than too few.
You would usually lay a 10mm aggregate at a depth of 30-40mm, but on a driveway this would need to be at least 50mm. A 20mm aggregate would need to be at least 40-50mm deep, and at least 50-60mm on driveways. A larger aggregate will settle and bond together better than smaller ones. The depth you will need to select for your gravel or slate will always depend on the aggregate size and what the surface will be used for.
Our gravel calculator can be used for most gravel and aggregates featured on our website. The gravel calculator is not for use with Pebbledashing Aggregates, Resin Bonded Aggregates, cobbles and pebbles, and Rubber Chippings. If you would like to estimate how much of these aggregates you will need for your project, please contact us and we will be able to help you directly.
If you are ordering a large amount of gravel, aggregate or slate maybe you would like to discuss it with us on 01629 630 256, as there may be transport savings to be made on orders over 15 bulk bags, or on a loose tipped load of 10 tonnes or more.
