Types of slate chippings

We supply slate chippings that are a by-product from past tile manufacture, which means that our slate is 100% recycled material.

All of our slate chipping products look fantastic both wet and dry, with a variety of sizes from mini mulch, 20mm, 40mm, to larger paddlestones. We offer various natural colours including plum, blue, graphite grey and green (note: colours may vary due to the seam being mined).

Frequently Asked Questions

Paddlestones are larger pieces of slate which are formed through tumbling, while slate chippings are much smaller. Both aggregates share the same characteristics, such as their flat shape, smooth texture and rounded edges and look stunning when combined in rockeries, borders and water features.

Yes, slate chippings create small gaps (voids) between the stones, which allow rainwater to pass through rather than pool at the surface.

Yes, slate chippings can prevent cats from digging due to their rough edges and their size. Larger slate chippings (40mm) are the most effective as they are heavier and difficult for cats to move.

Slate chippings create a porous surface and therefore we always recommend laying down a weed prevention membrane first as this will hinder weeds growing through the stones.

Slate chippings are uncomfortable for slugs and snails to crawl over due to their shape and texture, so they are an effective deterrent. To create a barrier, lay a thick layer of slate chippings around your plants or between your garden beds and grass.

Slate has never been more popular, so here at Decorative Aggregates, we've put together everything you need to know about slate chippings.
